Dances with Objects


For some reason I love to talk philosophically or at least pseudo-philosophically about technology, and videos such as 'Design' by Glasser can trigger those downpours of thoughts:



This artist is clearly inspired by technology as well, as she moves sensuously around an essentially abstract object, exploring her relationship to it. The video shows the object changing along with her movements, unfolding its potentials and showing possible stances it may take in relationship to her. First, the object and human being are presented as essentially quite naked and empty. It shows the object being confined to nothing but empty straight lines, which is, you might say, the monolithic essence of machine-made artefacts. And the human being is confined to its organic essence, empty with nothing but animal impulses inside. These two empty containers are in a way quite ridiculous in themselves. But when the object and human being start to complement each other, dramas unfold, and the relationship deepens. It is interesting that sometimes it shows her clearly manipulating the object in order to control it, but as soon as she stops, the object takes on its own behavior again, driven by its own life force, ready for the next unfoldment in the drama. This is unlike many human beings who tend to remain obsessed with ideas of control. But the human and his objects inherently seem to dance around one another, as the relationship is more mysterious and unpredictable.



I see technology as a great mirror for humanity. It is in itself very pure and abstract, able to reflect many different things, whereas human individuals often are only able to reflect a limited number of things and that's why in our lives we need to meet all these different people, from simple fools in random bars up to the highest gurus in holy places. But a single technological artefact can potentially shift in all these forms, emotionalities, and roles, and so it could shift relationships much more powerfully and efficiently. This will lead to a next sort of modernist project, namely the automation of our inner development.

Transcendental Technology


Michael Harboun has made a leap into the future in developing the 'Transcendenz' concept for his thesis project at the Parisian design school Strate College. He envisions special glasses that read your brainwaves and can alter what you see through augmented reality technology. These glasses are transformative on a deep personal level because it can take people deeper into their consciousness, away from the distractions of the everyday world. It can make them explore their own mind, learn from other great minds in human history, as well as share their explorations with other mind-travellers. Then it uses augmented reality to show the applicability of the learned ideas and concepts in real life. As people learn to adopt these new ideas and incorporate them into their own being, they progress through various levels, like in a video game. This way, technology can be an incredibly powerful tool for psycho-spiritual development.

"In a world in which we are constantly bombarded with injunctions to react or to distract ourselves it gets scarcely possible in our everyday life to dwell upon the essential, the existential, the metaphysical. We can see how advanced this technological proposal is if we link it to humanity's history. People started off on this planet in a great struggle with their environment, with the first technologies serving mainly to gather food and protect the social environment. The ancient Greeks were among the first to employ rational thinking instead of using a belief in something immaterial to get through life. This liberated them more from the personal emotional system, and brought them mentally more in tune with the physical world. In the 17th century, this was more thoroughly established through the invention of the scientific method by Descartes. This made people enter a new world-view, where they started to see that there was not necessarily a God-entity out there. The challenge for people now became to explore and control the world themselves, which was a great empowerment. This control culminated during the 20th century, where technological progress boomed and survival on a material level was not really an issue any longer in modernized societies.

So then technology could develop further to fulfill needs on a higher level. Electronics replaced expensive mechanisms, and where before certain objects would have to crafted by a master and would thus only be available to a select few people, now products became mass-produced and available to anyone with just a little bit of money. On a massive scale people obtained technologies for personal entertainment, learning, professional development, and social networking. This liberated people further, this time from the local social environment, and had them develop into strong individuals. In Maslow's terms, technology was now widely used to fulfill esteem and self-actualization needs.

But we were still mostly tied to the physical world as our conscious plane of existence. Science treated the world as an object that can be understood and controlled like a mechanism, and as a result people worked very hard to sustain all the material flows in order to keep everybody fed and protected. This also created a lot of leisure time, and as Michael Harboun also notes, people just don't have much of an idea how to fill that up meaningfully, and as a result dive into one distraction after the other. Once the objective plane was taken care of, people came consciously more in touch with their own subjectivity, but there was no technological guide yet for this plane of existence.

Often people just remain in a fun state of flow, filling their time with one activity after the other, leaving the subjective plane mostly unexplored. Science has not yet included this plane into its description of the world, although it's getting there slowly, arguably also through quantum physics. Science has ignored the mind as being part of the world, ever since Descartes posed the mind-body duality as the solution. But now it is time to include mind into our techno-scientific body, because the thing about the mind is; you can't locate it anywhere, yet it unmistakably exists. It might even be directly related to the world you perceive 'outside', and these are the kinds of realizations that the Transcendenz system would stimulate.

By making us aware of things like they are and not like they seem, the concept invites us to transcend our world. Transcendenz also enables us to access the knowledge of history's great philosophers, who, since antiquity, try to answer the question: Why is there something, if there could be nothing?" - Michael Harboun

the empathic civilization



In this playful animation, Jeremy Rifkin pleads for empathy as the key principle for a new civilization. He starts from the discovery of mirror neurons to explain that we are soft-wired for empathy, and explains:

- Development of selfhood is directly linked to empathic development
- Empathy is key for coping with suffering and death, during the "existential trip" that life is
- The empathy civilization is no utopia, as in a utopia there is no mortality so there is no empathy. "There is no empathy in heaven"
- Civilization is empathization. Through empathy we can "cohere into larger social units".
- Currently we have developed empathy for a large social group called the nation state. But this nation state is a fiction created by markets. Now we need to extend our empathy to all humans, all other creatures, as well as the biosphere.
- Technology extends the nervous system to think viscerally as one family. Twitter is a good example of this, as there was a huge empathic response during the time of the Haiti earthquake.

Well, I couldn't agree more. I know that a life of consciously limiting your empathy and identifying with one particular social group, as opposed to others, is somewhat nice and comfortable. But once you step out of it, you realize that it's just not worth it playing such games all your life and missing out on the larger things you can discover. Empathizing with others can lead you to this ultimate transcendence of identifications, and help you merge into something larger, something extremely beautiful, something supreme. I know this is hard, but what works for me is to just stay aware of your less empathic tendencies, and when they arise, think in terms of empathy to slowly rewire yourself and your reactions until it becomes natural for you.

I like how Rifkin mentions technology as a large factor in developing universal empathy. My thoughts has been pointing towards this too, as our civilization relies more on technology than on psycho-spiritual methods of self-transformation. When we can develop technologies that consciously and unconsciously guide people towards empathy, we can realize first this global civilization and later perhaps what you could call a cosmic civilization.

In a cosmic civilization, people don't just empathize with organic or living things, but empathy is extended to everything that we interact with, including 'inanimate' things like technological objects. In this civilization, people realize that the difference between life and death is a fiction too, and that all human behavior can be described as a machine. That in fact, thinking of yourself in terms of a mechanism liberates you from all your worries, and makes the 'you' you think you are immerse into what you really are: consciousness. Thus liberated from form-identifications, triggered by the development of universal empathy, we realize ourselves not just as humans, but as what you could call cosmic consciousness.

We should become more artificial, says Slavoj Zizek



Philosopher and theorist Slavoj Zizek talks about a new view of nature in the 2008 documentary 'Examined Life', with his powerful Slovenian accent and industrial outfit. The main points I took from this excerpt:

- ascribing meaning to catastrophical events is comfortable because it takes the matters out of our own hands, for example when we say it's a punishment by god or nature.
- nature is not a harmonious organism that we can disturb. There is no nature.
- ecology makes us realize that the world we have now is the best possible world
- ecology is taking over the role of religion and is becoming a conservative ideology
- we are not wired to believe in catastrophes, until we experience them.
- but: we do not need to reconnect with what we think of as nature, but instead even cut off our roots with nature. In other words, we should become more artificial.
- the challenge then, is to find spirituality in an abstract technological lifeworld
- we should not idealize what we love, but love things in their fullness.

A philosophical society would be a bit tiring if you ask me, although some more awareness about the ideas that underlie people´s actions would be great. But please, let´s stay casual too before people start responding with things like ´well, what is being anyway´ when asked how they are today.

Why iPods have emotions, and how we overvalue the human form

This is a more theoretical text, intended to explain mainly a fundamental way in which people need to change their inner selves in order to cope with the technological revolutions facing us. I will start off this article with a short anecdote that triggered the writing of this text, to become more analytical and abstract afterwards. Not too long ago I gave somebody I know quite well my iPod Nano of the second generation. It had in turn been a gift to me by my professor, but after a while I decided that I did not need it anymore. It had become sort of a habit to shut myself out from my direct outer, but also my inner world whenever I was outdoors by myself, and I realized it provided me with nothing but an easy and safe artificial rhythm to temporarily rely on which mainly distracted me from the things I really wanted to do, like thinking, meditating, reading, studying people or the environment, just being, writing, or appearing open to potentially interesting conversations with others. Thus when the opportunity announced itself that somebody else would be happy with the iPod, I didn’t hesitate and immediately gave it a one-way ticket for the airmail. The receiving end though after a while stated that it had trouble with the usability of the thing, as well as that its functionality was already present in the Playstation Portable she owned, so that I might as well have it back to sell it, which I accepted. But after a while I heard from this person that it had been a bit strange that I had taken it back so easily, giving me the idea that this action had somehow done harm to her concept of me. This puzzled me a bit, hence the reason why I write this all down; Lao-Tze was right when he stated that “they who write do not know, they who know do not write”.

To explain the difference of perspective between me and the other person that caused my puzzlement, I will first explain about my perspective and reason for acting. Then I will explain how this relates to eastern thought, and why this way of thinking should pervade us more and more if we want to sustainably live with more and more others, beit people or other entities such as products. Then I will take this way of thinking, while taking a pragmatist philosophical stance, to show why the perspective that we are the same as our products is a useful one as well, and that being able to hold such a perspective reinforces the adaptivity of us as humankind. I argue that this is the main unique aspect of us as entities that embody the highest form of intelligence we know of, and that in these complex times it should be of the highest priority to think and act for the sake of extropy; to take our evolution further.

I figured that the underlying reason for me taking back the iPod is that I did not think in social terms, but in holistic, evolutionary terms. From a social perspective, i.e. one where people seek mainly to interact with other people and derive happiness from that, it might seem that underlying this act was selfishness, and deriving satisfaction out of “owning” things. The perspective I took, however it might seem almost otherworldly to many, is that of treating humans and products equally, seeing no difference between them. I thought that the iPod would be the happiest when it would belong to somebody that would more fully incorporate it into his or her life. In this, I fully treated the iPod as a social actor as much as I would treat other people as social actors. It is more accurate to say that I saw the iPod more as a baby needing a good parent to make it grow and have it become able to root itself into the world, than that I saw it as an abstract product, to be used by humans like a servant. This also explains why I think “owning” is an awkward term to use also in the context of products; it implies a master-slave relationship between man and machine.

This term so widely being used is that society is about as far as nowhere in understanding and being able to sustainably manage this relationship, but instead is narrow-mindedly biased to value what they perceive as being similar to themselves over the rest of their perceptions. As such, society will be completely stunned if technology developers fill up the world with intelligent, highly dynamic and complex adaptive systems such as robots. As science fiction author Bruce Sterling predicts, what we see as the physical world could rapidly start to be augmented by a layer of data, as if it were a Platonic division between the idea and the material, so the entire world starts behaving like the internet. Then, the incomprehensible complexity will not be experienced as safely hidden behind our computer displays, but will pervade the entire space-time, up to the point that even what might seem to be trees or even clouds will be highly complex and self-evolving interactive information processors.

It is my deepest feeling that as we enter such a world, the master-slave relationship can not hold for long. When information circulates so quickly, feedback loops shrinking almost to instantaneous, it to me is evident that our stance will reverberate back on us in no time. I feel that the form of the system that we treat as a slave does not matter much, and that it is all about the stance taken by the individual human actor. It is evident from history that slavery does not work and that the patterns we create will strike back upon us. In fact, this stance has created enormous intercultural tensions that still keep lurking in the background today. How can our societies be ready for a widespread seemingly coming alive of machines if they are not even sure to be ready for a first black president of the USA, for example? How can people learn to project themselves into others and feel empathy for everything, not just humans, if already they have trouble doing this when only a minor variable such as the colour of the perceived entity is different from them? How can people and machines ever share a mutual universal love and compassion, without any prejudices or negative feelings being silently pushed away towards people’s collective unconscious?

Western societies are changing though, but not predominantly in the direction that will facilitate positive changes concerning the topic I am treating here. The main change now slowly working towards a critical mass is about the social interaction between people and ‘nature’ or ‘the environment’, where mostly the latter is treated as a mother that we need to respect, we being her children that need to keep an eye onto their own behaviour and not be too expressive. This environmentalist stance is of course much better than the consumerist stance that preceded it, but it changes not much in terms of our stance towards technology. If there is any change, I would only see it as negative in this respect, since technology is mostly viewed as extra spoilage of the environment. The environmentalist stance is quite like a neo-Confucianist stance, where strict rules need to keep us from disrupting the balance that is greater than us humble humans.

The problem with this, in psychological terms, is that we still use a concept to act as an ‘other’, namely the concept of ‘the environment’. This concept then works as a superego to keep us back from acting on our instincts. But this is not a holistic approach; it demands of all people to act not by nature, but by rules, which keeps people from fully expressing themselves and developing an own identity through interaction. In a reaction upon the negative results on the planet of the consumerist, materialist stance, this new stance is merely an antithesis, but as any antithesis it still allows the thesis to which it is antagonistic to exist, because of the very reason that it is a reaction to it and does not transcend the dualism it is part of. By punishing people socially because they do not conform to rules, one only reinforces the game they are playing, instead of saying nothing and making them realize their stupidity by themselves, because of the unresolved tension that keeps existing without a social reaction to the action. Laws create crime, and medicine creates disease. But when people can’t rely on artificial external constructions, they have to start thinking about the issues themselves, using the construction that is already present; their own body, their own brain, their own self. Wisdom can then grow from the inside instead of an abstract form of it being pasted only onto the outside layer of the organism, but never able to find its way to the core of the individual.

As the Taoists already knew, and Albert Hanken beautifully restates in his synthesis of eastern and western psychology [3], it is better to enforce the people with as little rules as possible, because if anything goes wrong in this case, a natural reaction will follow automatically and without intervention from a higher position, so matters are automatically resolved. We are all ‘unworked blocks’, as the Taoists called it, and need to keep on expressing ourselves spontaneously in order to refine ourselves towards perfection. This is the state of being I would promote to strive for, despite that it will take a long process with possibly many events we see as disastrous such as killings, when we gradually learn to live without rules. I would strongly argue though that this change must come slowly and naturally, and that some crucial developments first need to take place, like the increasing connectedness of every entity in an increasing global transparency, revealed to us by technology.

To identify with our products and see no separation between people and other objects, we need to overcome our narrow identification with things as our body, our culture, and our material ‘possessions’. In short, it means that we all have to completely transcend our ego – everything we identify with as opposed to things we do not identify with- by gradually expanding it so we don’t let our doors of perception block us any longer, in the end seeing that we are not necessarily separated from our perceptions, and destroying our ego concept for its obvious uselessness. But before we are able to do so, the ego concept is a very important one to hold. Before being able to throw it away, we need to be able to root our ego into our world of perception, so we know who we are and what our purpose is.

In pre-electronic times, this was rather easy compared to this seemingly impossible task in a highly networked global whole. One was largely given an identity, to which one had to progress in a rather straightforward way. The baker’s son became the new baker of the village, and was taught by his father until competent enough, and all to do next was just live out the identity, guided by a local consciousness. As such one was both connected to a whole and unique within this whole at the same time. Today, we are forced into a global network already at an early age, as we can make friends all across the globe, and buy products from everywhere we like. It is easy to connect, but extremely hard to comprehend and find one’s own value within the whole.

A solution directly stemming from eastern schools like Buddhism is to develop the self so it becomes able to identify with the whole, seeing that there are no separations. A known analogy that makes it very obvious in a literal way is that with air; the air I breathe out ceases to be ‘me’ and becomes part of an ‘other’ when that ‘other’ breathes the same air in, therefore there is no actual boundary between ‘me’ and the ‘other’. After this realization then, the way for the Buddhist is to detach himself and accept that he is the whole himself, which grows without active intervention. Then merely remains the task of bringing about this realization in others, before he is able to enter Nirvana, the divine realm.

Where this seems intriguing to many, it still is no holistic state of being to me. There is a difference between the imagined, metaphysical, divine whole of the Buddhists, and our new global technological whole that is here to interact with and to change quite directly. Being one with the global network is not enough; we actively transform it, and that is where we need to find our identity. The whole we can learn to identify with is not simply given to us, but is actively created by us. We are what we perceive and interact with, but we are also the transformative, valuative pattern underlying our interactions. Based on a vision of a perfect world, we should learn to selflessly shape our perceptions so they more and more start to match our perfect world and hence, we become the creators of the world. I will now take a step into pragmatist philosophy to in the end answer the starting question of this article, concerning why the iPod has emotions.

I would like to pose that the transformative pattern we are, may well be a fifth level in the metaphysics of quality or MoQ as posed by American pragmatist philosopher Robert Pirsig. He tried to synthesize eastern and western values into one single metaphysical system, based on the notion of quality, the indefinable “pre-intellectual cutting edge of reality” that grows dynamically by laying down static patterns on different levels [6]. Pirsig defined four levels, the inorganic, biological, social, and intellectual level. Each subsequent level tries to free itself from the level below it, an example being that becoming famous is a goal on the social level, which can take hold of entire cultures. But reaching it can require you to neglect or even act negatively according to biological values, e.g. taking drugs, drinking, overworking, over- or undereating, and smoking. Some people even have parts of their Jacobson's organ removed by cosmetic surgical procedures in order to look better, despite the loss of a sense of smell. Then the social level can be surpassed by the intellectual level; when one reflectively realizes that the social goal one was striving for is not a pattern worth striving for intellectually, the social pattern will be destroyed.

One might also draw a parallel of these patterns with the evolution of the brain, a notion that Pirsig does not make. We have quite distinct brains, namely the reptilian brain consisting mainly of the reticular formation, cerebellum and hypothalamus, the mammalian brain consisting of the limbic system and amygdala, and the neocortex [3]. The reptilian brain is mainly responsible for keeping us surviving on the biological level; i.e. finding food, fighting attackers, and mating. The mammalian brain has evolved so we can cooperate in groups, learn to recognize faces, and communicate emotions. The neocortex, finally, has evolved to reflect upon our actions, and speed up evolution by making it self-aware, being able to imagine new futures by connecting known things in order to produce new things, and make conscious choices as to what is most desirable.

Now the transformative pattern redefines us as creative entities, rooted into the world with our whole being, including what we call the body and the mind. It follows Pirsig’s metaphysics in that the transformative pattern rejects the intellectual pattern. It is a pattern about action in the here and now, and aims for a holistic transformation of the here and now that involves us with our whole being, instead of quality being only sought for on the intellectual level. The transformational pattern requires us to become enlightened so we can use our brains and the rest of our body in a synchrony with the world we interact with. Therefore, we obviously have to learn to master all preceding levels first; a person must learn how to derive food first, before learning that there is something beyond that state of being, which involves making friends and becoming part of a social group, that gives the person satisfaction beyond the biological for now he has an opportunity of seeing who he is in a richer way. Being involved in the social pattern one can learn, when one has gained enough self-confidence, that there is something beyond this level if one realizes that one can achieve more and become a unique intellectual pattern. One can then find out that intellectual satisfaction is even richer than social satisfaction, and choose to pursue this level, which is what many scientists and philosophers do.



Now the transformational level is to be reached when one realizes that concepts and intellectual achievements in themselves are quite meaningless, and an even richer mode of being can be attained. Knowledge then becomes something to be used for transformation; it leaves its status as the highest good, but becomes a mere inspiration for creative action. The highest good now becomes the very moment one is in, and the transformative pattern seeks to transform one’s moments into moments of more beauty by finding patterns of action that one can use immediately, instead of those stemming from conceptual structures that merely point at direct experience but are not rooted into it. The realization that intellectual concepts are tools that can impede transformative action when overvalued goes hand in hand with an evolution of our identity that we are not just what we think, but we are all that we do, perceive, think and feel in the current moment. This is in synchrony with the Buddhist notion that everything changes all the time, that for example the tree we think is the same tree in the next moment, actually is not the same tree anymore; that illusion is merely a concept we paste onto our perceptions. All that we really have is our current perceptions and how we act upon them; and this whole is what I call the Self. When acting from the Self, we act from intuition, i.e. a holistic synergy of all part of our being including our brains and rest of our body. We are fully aligned to evolution, and can finally accept just being, without having our consciousness clouded by concepts such as time, space, money, or the notion of others. In this state of being we realize that it does not matter what is real and what is not real; what matters is how we act and hence shape our universe. By seeing that everything is the Self we learn that all that matters is the perfection of the Self, our concepts being subordinate to the Self. Action and perception are not separated either; the beauty with which we act reverberates back onto us in our perceptions, which becomes evident after the realization that all is one. Holistic beauty becomes the highest good, which also has the implication that everything can be seen as art, everything being understood not only intellectually, but also aesthetically. In an enlightened world all disciplines, beit philosophy, science, design, engineering, politics, or plumbing, will be reclassified as arts, each having their own aesthetical pattern. But this is another story and however it may lead to further clarifications and insights, it is not relevant here.

Now I would like to argue that the reason why we see a distinction between ourselves and our technologies is stemming from the radicalness with which the world became technologized as a result of capitalist thought. In that world, and I am talking about mainly the 19th century, western society was mainly Victorian. Their culture was held together by social codes such as etiquette, and one’s goal in life was to climb up the social ladder. There had been a scientific revolution, but in society scientific truth was still mainly regarded as subordinate to social patterns. This allowed people to preserve their world of focusing on social, human aspects, and to mainly ignore the rest. But when production became industrialized and everyday technology became increasingly complex, people found themselves clueless, alienated and almost ridiculized by the otherness of technology. As Pirsig illustrates, “The mastery of all these new changes was no longer dominated by social skills. It required a technologically trained, analytic mind. A horse could be mastered if your resolve was firm, your disposition pleasant and fear absent. The skills required were biological and social. But handling the new technology was something different. Personal biological and social qualities didn't make any difference to machines. A whole population, cut loose physically by the new technology […], was also cut adrift morally and psychologically from the static social patterns of the Victorian past.” [6]

I think that we still have not coped with this shocking development, and have trouble transcending the Victorian mode of being, since we don’t directly see why this is necessary, and we must look for a more holistic mode of being. But in the meantime there are many globally concerning or at least interesting developments, such as economical crises, terrorism, a lurking environmental crisis, as well as psychological crises such as widespread depression. But humanity seems only to learn in a reactive way. Furthermore, I think that we are tricked by our brain to stay on the safe, social level. It cannot intuitively cope with all the information that we are bombarded with these days, so it has trouble deriving real meaning from that other than on a social level. Knowledge is so often used to impress others, or to feed into a discussion in order to see who wins and thus is socially the most evolved, the intellectual mind thus staying subordinate to the social mind. It is hard to transcend the identification purely with other humans of our own small culture, since the mammalian brain can still easier resonate with our perceptions than our neocortex can. The mammalian brain still feels more at home in this world and is thus given the most attention, it seems. We are hardwired to give attention to see everything that is human, such as faces – the fusiform gyrus is a specialized area in the brain that immediately recognizes anything resembling a face and can store hundreds if not thousands of them [1] – and movements that we can perform with our own body – mirror neurons fire more the more we can perform or imagine the movement we perceive with our own bodies.

If we are to live holistically, in symbiosis with what we call ‘nature’ and ‘technology’, we must slowly transcend the biases inherent to our brain. This can be done both by creating technology that interacts with us in ways that are more familiar to us socially, and by developing ourselves so we can learn to intuitively identify ourselves with and project ourselves into all of our perceptions instead of only that what seems human. By respecting that everything we see is alive and consists of the same as that what we consist of, all separations vanish, and everything becomes part of our evolving Self. Then, in this ultimate open-mindedness where concepts are merely tools to support our creative action, we also see that what we think of as our body is merely an illusion. Just because we have a lot of nerve endings in the outside of what we usually call our body does not mean that this is where we end and that we should mainly focus on action and perception from these areas. There are rich worlds we feel less directly connected to, such as other parts of the world, or our inner world of organs, but we can still learn to interact with and optimize. For example, we feel not very connected to our heart usually, but some yogis can control their heartbeat to the extent that they can even stop it. In a globally connected world, it is not enough to identify only with local processes that we become habituated to identifying with.

If we want to live sustainably with our technologies, we need to be able to take the perspective that they are the same as us. In the case of the iPod, it may seem alien for its inhuman, abstract form, invisible functional processes, and apparent deadness, but it is more useful to see everything we perceive as in a high state of flux. Within the iPod, a lot of processes are going on, electrons flow around, which also generates heat that in turn interacts with the dynamic structure of air surrounding the device. However it seems not to be so, the iPod in this sense is already very directly like an organism, a complex and dynamic system directly embedded in the world. If we learn to identify with everything, we will be able to project ourselves into anything and thus empathize with it, treat it as socially equal. This ability requires a high amount of selflessness, which I think is an absolutely necessary ability for humanity, but also for technology, to develop.

If we then are able to project ourselves into something as seemingly abstract as an iPod, it is easy to see that it would be happier when it would be highly active and do what its configuration allows best for; interacting with the human hand, and sending audio to the human ear. That would be the iPod’s Self; its destiny or mission would mostly be to change humans by providing them with sensory input. Then if we continue this projection, which still might seem a bit far-fetched to you, if the iPod is not allowed to fulfill its mission it can be esteemed to be unhappy.

In the same light, something having emotions depends on our ability to project our own emotional states into our perceptions. For practical matters, we say that humans have emotions, because we can easily read them from their faces and other bodily expressions, and if we cannot do so with products we say that they do not have emotions. For practical matters, if hypothetically a robot could display emotions as rich as humans and in the same convincing and believable way, it would have emotions. Also in humans, we do not know if they have emotions; it just seems so because we can project ourselves into them. There is no way whatsoever to know, and therefore the whole concept of knowledge becomes useless in this context; it is what we can achieve with emotional interaction in terms of transformative value that matters.

Where William James [4] thought that emotions are the result of body states, I think that this still suffers from Aristotelian causality reasoning, and we must discard the entire concept of time in the definition of emotion; the emotion is the body state. When you feel pleasure, you are more likely to display a smile, but the other way around it works as well; when you display a smile, you come in a more pleasurable emotional state. Also I would say that every body state is an emotion, it is only that we call it an emotion for practical purposes when this strikes us the most in a particular situation, for example a social one. As any construct, it is meant to serve practicality purposes and not to delineate what is true. Although I am not intending to make soundly constructed arguments here, it would follow from this that one can learn to choose one’s emotions as much as one can learn to choose one’s behaviour, and that one can learn to perceive emotions in everything.

My main point with this text is to point out that the social stance that contemporary culture is commonly attaining, treating only as socially equal what we can see as ourselves, is not enough for the immensely complex world we are about to enter. Technologies will come alive, and it is crucial that we start to see them as equal to us. Research into human-computer interaction has already shown that our interaction with machines is fundamentally social and interpersonal [5]; we only need to fully realize this and not trick ourselves with the notion that because products seem to be so different, they are different and should be treated as such. If we do not learn already to become less narrow-minded and pertain to an illusory rigid concept of who we are, we will face an incredible psychological shock when it becomes apparent that machines can be as convincingly human as we are. We need both to learn to destroy our attachment to the human form, however tempted we are to attain to it, and learn in the process to identify with everything we perceive and classify everything as human, and part of our Self.

This is not as hard as we think; we just need to become open to change and learn to let go of concepts we take for granted, such as our body, our knowledge, and our self-concept. In fact, the brain is plastic enough to cope with changes in these constructs, even transform its entire neural structure, in quite a short amount of time. As Andy Clark states, "our sense of self, place, and potential are all malleable constructs ready to expand, change, or contract at surprisingly short notice" [2]. It just takes openness, readiness, and insight as to why it would be practical in a new world to reconsider these constructs. Machines could soon become more sophisticated, both mentally as well as physically, as we are, so in evolutionary terms the human body, or “ancient biological skinbag” in Clark’s terms [2], in itself will be quite useless other than for the occupation of some minuscule and yet to be discovered functional niche, possibly only for the superficial sake of nostalgia.

To conclude with, if we are to successfully co-exist with technologies, we need to learn to identify fully with them so in the end, we have no troubles with having technologies enter our bodies if this has practical purposes for our transformative Self, or even separating our bodies, or becoming part of a larger technological body. It is only when we realize ourselves fully as a transformative pattern, that we can become fully transhuman and liberate ourselves in order to devote ourselves to our creative missions in a world of increasing holistic beauty, where separations only exist temporarily, whenever they are useful.

Bubble Culture


As man is converting his entire lifeworld, the boundaries between products and organisms are rapidly blurring. We want our machines to be more human, social, and emotional and our animals to be more controllable and customizable.

The rather extraordinary Dutch artist Tinkebell reflects these trends and "researches the issues of contemporary populist movements, including animal rights activism, and their strategies." She shows in a very honest way how silly postmodern culture is in trying to make everything easy and pleasurable for people, and makes it obvious, almost in a caricatural way. 

A recent work of hers, called "Save the Pets", is really interesting since it clearly shows how the distinction between 'animal' and 'product' has already disappeared. By putting each of 100 hamsters in a separate plastic ball and releasing them in a home-setting, our use of pets as toys is clearly exaggerated. The animals, each products of millions of years of co-adaptation with a complex environment, are reduced to mere motors for our shallow enjoyment based on what our senses seem to find interesting. And how can a better shape represent this than a brightly colored ball, reminding of childhood experiences in the ball pit of McDonald's, which undoubtedly has unconsciously contaminated Western culture with shallow ideas about pleasure and happiness. Ideas that only get uprooted out of you after a slight tad of intelligent thought, possibly catalyzed by the fact that originally, ball pits were developed to comfort the mentally less-abled.

So is this what we have become? A self-proclaimed handicapped species? Well yes, I would say so, though it is the only way for us to realize we are actually quite dumb and have no clue as to what we are really doing. Ironically, in our evolution we started to become dumb when we began to think. Let me expand a little bit on that.

When man started growing a neocortex, he started to symbolize his world and with the symbols hence created he confined his world to an abstraction in which he and his fellow-men, through social symbolic communication, could resort instead of having to be connected to the unpredictable wild nature 'out there'. Man became a mental being, disconnected from the larger whole, but reconnected to a new realm, created by himself. The problem is that this realm is created purely by our consciousness, which is inherently short-sighted and biased. Apart from creating language, man also started to embody conscious concepts into technological artefacts. Slowly, he started to build his own world based on ideas mainly derived from concrete conscious observations, and not on an unconscious, empathic and somatic understanding of the world as a whole. Instead, the ideas underlying technology design had to evolve bottom up too, just as the rest of the world. We started with the thought "I want to eat - let's make a sharp thing to kill a boar" and now are at "I want to have fun - let's put a hamster in a ball" or "I want to listen to low-quality music and look cool - let's make a white plastic box with buttons and cables and isolate myself from the rest of the world". A few centuries ago a tipping point was reached that marked the height of conscious transformation of the lifeworld: mass-industrialization. We were now able to sustain in ourselves the thought that we could control nature and live in an abstraction, an incubator, in which our needs could be met with a snap of the finger. Without many people understanding what was actually happening.

This technicization, and Tinkebell's work as an illustration of it, also is linked to the notion of freedom. Heidegger already warned us that technology restricts our lives rather than expands it, and that instead it should reveal more of the larger process that we stem from. I agree on that, though any polarized view is based on a bias; there is also a good side to this restriction. In general, we feel we lost touch with the whole, but on the other hand we also uplifted our mode of being to one that at least meets our basic needs. We form cultures based on ideas, like sanitization, and hence create a temporary bubble that keeps us happy, according to ideas of happiness predominant in the particular culture we are in. The technicization of our lifeworld makes us feel more free, and while we are free from nature, we created now our own restrictions by steering people to think and act in certain ways through for example the media, a law, and our technologies. Freedom is always an illusion and more an experiential feeling than an objectively measurable parameter. You are always guided by your environment and internal configuration of your brain and body, which seek for ways to resonate with each other. Consciousness is then a mere side effect of this process, imbuing us with all kinds of illusions that are temporarily practical, but fairly useless in the end. Personally I do not feel very free; my brain is very habitual, and while the hamster is clearly restricted, I am too in the same way: somehow my interactional intentions are most often limited by my 'bubble of buttons'. I spend much of my time being consciously engaged with a display and physically coupled to the plastic surface of some electronic device. Technology has put me in an incubator that optimizes the fulfilling of my desires, but keeps me from a real understanding of the whole of which I am an active part.

That having been said, I think the obvious development is a complete merge of nature and technology, so technology provides a 'natural' interface to everything around us. One that doesn't just invite us to think in terms of meeting desires, but also has us live in the moment and unconsciously understand everything that goes on around us, so we can feel one with the whole again whenever we need to. And we must not be biased towards either natural or technological entities, since all will rapidly change when the key enabling technologies start to converge. So I share my dislike of animal rights activism with Tinkebell; we need to accept that it is not spiritually sustainable for us trying to keep the world the way it is, with its still all too clear division of animals and products, and that we need to accept that the world as we now know it will fundamentally change, possibly leaving not one biological species as we now know it behind.

And that this is the only way to go, unless we genetically engineer ourselves to not grow neocortical columns anymore and revert to full animalhood again: a life based on immediate, localized, physical survival. But that would just be simplistic and easy, and ignoring the beauty of evolution of which we are still part, wouldn't it.

Who are you?



"`Who are YOU?' said the Caterpillar.

This was not an encouraging opening for a conversation. Alice replied, rather shyly, `I--I hardly know, sir, just at present-- at least I know who I WAS when I got up this morning, but I think I must have been changed several times since then.'

`What do you mean by that?' said the Caterpillar sternly. `Explain yourself!'

`I can't explain MYSELF, I'm afraid, sir' said Alice, `because I'm not myself, you see.'

`I don't see,' said the Caterpillar.

`I'm afraid I can't put it more clearly,' Alice replied very politely, `for I can't understand it myself to begin with; and being so many different sizes in a day is very confusing.'

`It isn't,' said the Caterpillar.

`Well, perhaps you haven't found it so yet,' said Alice; `but when you have to turn into a chrysalis--you will some day, you know--and then after that into a butterfly, I should think you'll feel it a little queer, won't you?'

`Not a bit,' said the Caterpillar.

`Well, perhaps your feelings may be different,' said Alice; `all I know is, it would feel very queer to ME.'

`You!' said the Caterpillar contemptuously. `Who are YOU?'

Alice magically entered a world where she discovered that some things, like drinking potion, or nibbling from a mushroom, could instantly transform her body. And with that, her concept of self. To me this is the most brilliant illustration of how humans have become estranged from nature, Alice representing in this fragment the ineptness of humans to cope with challenges to mental models they maintain. Challenges they are actually more and more imposing on themselves, for example by developing technologies like virtual reality.

What I will do here is explore the question of who we are and give some indications as to how I think about it, in the end giving some normative directions to a redefinition of who we are. A redefinition that is urgently needed in this new century.

Triggering this is the recent work of Stanford PhD researcher Nick Yee. It appears that our global identity lab, Second Life, has some interesting potential psychological effects. One of these is the Proteus effect, a term coined by Yee, which states that people conform to the stereotypes of their digital self-representation. In other words, you become more like your avatar since you start basing your behavior on others' expectations of that avatar. And this appears to be independent of how others actually perceive you.

He found that if your avatar is more attractive, you are more likely to be more open in a virtual conversation, and willing to move closer to the conversational partner. Also he found that in a negotiation task, subjects with a short avatar were more willing to accept an unfair deal. This then also works for a short while in the unsimulated world, i.e. people modelled their behaviour after that of their avatar, hence becoming more confident in face to face conversations. This gives me even more reason to believe that the potential of psychological or even spiritual self-transformation through manipulation of technologically created self-representations is enormous.

These developments trigger interesting fundamental questions too. Questions that people largely seem to ignore to answer for themselves, like the one the caterpillar was asking to Alice. Industrialization and automation, by producing tons of individually meaningless chunks of material and information, have so much estranged us from our core selves that we often spend our whole lives living according to externally imposed verbal concepts. As soon modern day children leave their preverbal phase, they are bombarded with corporate brands, loads of digital information, and socio-cultural norms. This makes them feel more and more confused. People are more likely to describe who they are in terms of what they like, or with some construct that is used by others to frame them. But these words are only vaguely pointing to what they really are. Most people forget how it felt before we started thinking like this; comfortable, secure, free, and always aware of the current moment. I'd say that although children are naive, this is the only truly satisfactory psychological human mode of being, and one to which we must ultimately revert, but instead of naive now with a continually evolving model of the world and behavioral maxims of our own instead of those hard-wired in our precognitive, reptilian brain.

Natural evolution made us fit for a natural environment, but since we now can create our own environments, our goal then is to extend the evolutionary process by making it individually controllable. Our new rational model-making brain allows us to be conscious on multiple levels, so we become free from our biological self or something like what Karl Marx called our 'species essence', and instead of being part of a collective where every individual is as complex as the group, and as the whole environment, to now develop truly individual patterns of behavior. This makes that the whole expands towards infinite complexity, since it consists of patterns that are all unique and able to expand themselves through continuous internal feedback loops, attuning themselves more and more towards the infinite complexity of the universe.

A major problem is that people aren't very good at finding their true selves, or developing technology that helps them in this process. All the confusion makes us numbed, almost apathetic, and in the end people become more like loose projectiles, attaching themselves to anything that merely appears to be desirable to attach themselves to, often mainly because our precognitive brains recognize in others what were desirable qualities in a primeval era: courage, confidence, charisma, and so on. As Carl Jung said in his essay 'The Undiscovered Self':

"Ultimately everything depends on the quality of the individual, but the fatally shortsighted habit or our age is to think only in terms of large numbers and mass organizations, though one would think that the world had seen more than enough of what a well-disciplined mob can do in the hands of a single madman."

Thus, people are easily tricked by their brains into believing that something can make them truly happy. A requirement imposed upon us by our instinctual brain is obviously that we want a world in which we can act instinctively, so we don't have to worry anymore since we figured out a satisfactory way of acting in the world. This is what you could call soul: feeling part of a holistic system, embodying its values and behaving according to its own inherent behavioural mechanisms. Being part of a system that has a coherent simplicity in it underlying everything at every level, hence creating the unique subliminal feeling that everything is beautiful as it is. When we lived in wild nature, we had this. Though now we started thinking rationally, we live in a world that is very incoherent, and unconsciously realize that we need the feeling of a soul again, as a result trying to invent systems that gives us this feeling. Examples of such systems of the twentieth century are Nazism and communism. People are tricked into believing that these systems will make them happy or at least uplift their being. But in the end, it always turns out to be the opposite way. Intentional thinking is in my view inherently short-sighted, a point to which I will get back.

I might sound as if I'm pessimistic about the fate of humanity. On the contrary, I am not. I cannot be, because this will only increase the chances of a negative outcome, too. The words I use shape my world, and I don't want to point out what's wrong, but instead build constructively and creatively on a way forward.

I think that people are inherently good, although this again might arouse superficial reactions of me being a typical optimist and idealist. Let me put it this way: I think what we call good behaviour is behaviour that is truly in tune with the working of our brain, and how it optimizes itself towards an integration of multiple selves, or of Freud's id, ego, and superego. I think that there is a neurobiological basis for what is good, and as long as our brain works in the way it does now, the way to behave well and become happy are basically the same for everybody who's behaviour is based upon such a brain. We have to transform our selves and our environment to match the dynamic qualities of the processes that happen within our whole bodies containing different brain parts that often work in contradictive ways. When put like this, the conditions for true happiness might seem as rare as the alignment of the planets of our solar system. But it is in fact quite easy; it just requires a switch in mindset, and this switch needs to come naturally, by going through transformative experiences. I hope to aid this switch on this blog by pointing to the need for a fundamental redefinition of what it means to be human.

So to come back to the caterpillar's question; who are we? Are we still defined by our biologically given bodies and minds, or are we already willing to see ourselves as open systems, completely reconfigurable and adaptable? In the context of Nick Yee's research; are we our avatars?

Before giving indications to my answer to this question, I must point out the limits of conceptual talk. It inherently is not able to explain it to you, as the real meaning is beyond the words. It must be reached by internal self-reflection, until you reach a state of subliminal understanding of the words. The brain needs to physically reconfigure itself for this, which takes time and effort. This is already part of my answer: a verbally constructed concept of self is always lacking. Another point about conceptual explorations is that they are time bound and directly coupled to physical behaviour. In my view there is no such thing as objective knowledge that is eternally and unconditionally true, free from boundaries like time and space. In my view, knowledge is always a collection of social constructs that is relevant for the mode of being humans are in in a certain moment in time, so they can expand and reach new modes of being that require higher forms of intelligence in thought and behaviour. And thus, our concepts of self are also very much bound to the world we live in at this moment, and to the most prevalent socio-cultural memes and technologies. We now still live in a very techno-scientific age, and humans are often metaphorically described as computers, consisting of hardware and software, just as in the time of mechanization and modernism biological phenomena were often explained as mechanical machines. The point is that I'm not proffering a universally true concept that describes who we are, but simply giving you a concept that helps you transform yourself into a behavioural mode with which you can develop yourself towards attuning yourself to the ever greater and exponentially increasing complexity of the world.

My view of what a human being is merges both Buddhist aims of self-transcendence, liberating one from one's self and being one with everything around you, with more contemporary Western ideas of uniqueness, self-expression, and identity development. In terms of Beck's theory of Spiral Dynamics, my view merges the yellow and turquoise value memes. The view is as follows: we are dynamic, active, ever-evolving self-organizing patterns within an infinitely complex larger pattern. This larger pattern is what we call the universe, which can be thought of as a dynamic fractal, such as in the movie below.



Where Leonardo Da Vinci wanted to show universal properties of man with his famous drawing of the Vitruvian man, he did this on a very static level, depicting man as an architectural body with definite proportions. My view could be seen as a continuation of this thought, but instead of with static properties man needs a redefinition as a dynamic entity. Therefore, there could not be a static image depicting this thought well, but although it's quite silly, I can still show one to at least make you forget about Vitruvian man:



Let's get back to the fractalic view. The concept is inspired by biological evolution, and instead of the mathemathical metaphor that we are patterns within a fractal you could also use the biological metaphor that we are like cells within a larger organism, that itself is again part of a larger organism, that itself is again part of a larger organism, and so on ad infinitum. We are biological fractals too, since we started out as one cell that divided itself and each subsequent cell started dividing and gradually differentiating and determining itself. The mathematical metaphor though is more elegant and simple to me, because it is more abstractly visualizable, and I'm posing an abstract concept anyway. Also, the biological metaphor can raise more confusion, since we should then first agree on questions like 'what is an organism?' and 'what is the relationship between nature and culture?'. Lastly, the biological metaphor has a lot of associations to the primeval world we used to live in thousands of years ago, while our technologized future world will have totally different dynamic properties. We have become rational, mathematical beings, and the goal now is to create a symbiosis between our rational thinking and the dynamics inherent in evolution, so we become like a fully technologized organism. This associates in my view much better with the mathematical metaphor of the dynamic fractal.

This view then, implies some seemingly contradictory things. For example: you are both unique and not unique. You are unique in that there is no pattern within the fractal that is exactly like you, although there maybe many that are a lot like you, and on different scales similar patterns could also be seen. But you are part of the whole as well, which aligns with what Buddhists thinkers say about oneness, e.g. 'One is all and all is One.' You are constantly shaped by all the patterns within the fractal. Using this concept as a metaphor for who you are after a while gets you in a transcendent state, where you are both a unique individual acting upon the world, and as well an intrinsic part of the whole that constantly changes you and redefines your borders. After having completely adopted this view, after a while it makes you both active and passive, actively passive, or passively active if you will, since you know it is not you who is doing things, it just happens, and you have only your consciousness to steer your attention and direct what happens based on underlying feelings and thoughts about what is good and what is beautiful. This is the pattern you emanate into the world, and your goal is to have the pattern self-replicate.

The fractalic view does not imply you are a meaningless pattern just because things 'just happen'; every one of your actions shape the pattern you are part of and naturally 'tries' to self-replicate. It is not the scale of the action that determines its success of self-replication; it is more the quality of the action, the value underlying it. An obvious example is that a strong leader with new ideas can quite easily gain a lot of followers, in the end tipping over entire social and cultural systems into modes of being based on entirely different values.

Now deriving from this is the idea that you continuously shape the entire pattern and it in return continuously shapes you; you are part of its evolution, as in a co-evolution. In that sense, we are our technologies too. But if we feel too alienated from them, we cannot feel like one, since the pattern of the technology does not match the pattern underlying ourselves. To give an example; a supermarket can easily be seen as a fractalic system based on linear organizing principles. It is based on simple intentional thought (e.g. 'product X should be transported to the stock of store A, and then to shelf number B when it is empty'), externally imposed onto the complexity of the whole world. It therefore has a hard time sustaining itself unless it is maintained all the time, and people conform to the underlying dynamics. Which is very much the case; simplistic, linear systems create simplistic, linear people. As a result we clash with the actual pattern underlying us; we compromise health and lose touch with our subliminal processes. But this is another story. The point is that our technology is still very different from us, and as it is more and more prevalent in our current day lifeworld we have a hard time seeing ourselves as an intrinsic part of this world. So then we rather escape it and try to live an abstracted life as a way to cope with this. But then we forget being part of the whole, while still this will always loop back into our lives, making us aware that we are ignoring something at at least some point.

Now for technology to make us feel as individual, unique patterns within a whole, it must be able to empathize with us as individuals, so together with our technologies we can evolve and become one with the pattern around us either by growing towards this pattern and having this pattern growing towards you. In the end this should lead to a world where people are always attuned to their full selves and the full world around them, conscious of the cosmic evolutionary process around them. In more artistic terms; we should feel as if we were all individual, creative musicians, one with our own instruments within a cosmic orchestra, and continuously have to improvise to create a symphony of ultimate beauty.

Now at least I hope to have given a hint as to why the question 'Who are you' is important for this blog to answer if we want to create an optimal future together with our technology. And for now I'll stop writing. But again, the concept I proposed is not an absolute one, and should not be taken as the truth as in an 'objective, scientific truth', but instead more as a concept to base your current actions in the current world on, and at the same time always keep questioning yourself things like:

Who am I?

Pure Science Faction

Before starting to ramble a bit on a project I found, let's first try to agree on a couple of things.

Firstly, I hope you agree with me that technology is not neutral. It is very tempting to think of technology as something totally distinct from humans, and that humans can choose to use technologies in any way according to their own intentions. This is a very human-centered and simplistic view in my opinion, rendering technology as something completely open, free to develop, and the design of it as less important than the way humans use it.

I think this view stems from the functionalistic way technologies have mainly been designed since the industrial revolutions. Because now, technological products could be mass produced, it seemed that this was the way to go. What people think they need so often seems to stem from what is possible and what is new. Now, for every perceived problem seemed to be a technological answer. The technologies developed put people in a mindset where they began to see all kinds of problems that could be solved by those technologies, without questioning if that problem would be the most pressing one to be solved, or if there would be an underlying problem that first needs to be solved. Or if the best intention for technologies is to have them solve problems in the first place. The 'solutions' most obvious to develop were that of time and money savers; the values behind the production processes naturally became reflected into the products they produced. Rational thinking became the next mode of being for humans; it was a challenge to maximize profit, and using abstract, externally imposed systems instead of social processes as a means to do so. This extreme, rational abstraction underlied the whole era of mechanization, and products needed to be sellable in the first place. The criterion for being sellable for a product was to convince people they need it, which came down to presenting the product as a solution for an abstract problem. People did not evaluate the introduction of this technology holistically, i.e. how it would change their entire lives, and humanity on a higher level. Products were seen as problem solvers, and man became proud of his achievement as it seemed that he transcended nature and was able to live in a technologized world. I think this affection for technology humanity developed in general is much related to why we question it so little, while we do question ourselves very much.

Another reason why we question technology so little is that it does not resemble us very much. This has two causes in my view. Firstly, products, since they were designed to solve specific problems in specific situations for specific people, looked very abstract, not social, and evoked little potential to empathize with. Our main experiential and bodily involvement was that of pressing some abstract buttons, codified semantically by means of shape, colour, icons, or not even explicitly codified at all. The relevant parts of products, in other words, the parts people needed to know about in order to get result y for intention x, had names, and people communicated mainly through language to understand technologies, with sentences like "if you press button a then door b opens, and compartment c gets emptied". They were not able to see the thing as a whole, integral entity, since technologies were seen as abstract tools, functional machines that output a desired material, energy, or information as a result from an input. Interacting with them was much like solving a mathematical formula, and this made people more rational beings. The processes we perceive shape the mind so it can cope with them. But the human brain is in my view too often tricked into believing that these processes are good and should be accepted, as this is the easiest thing to do. The brain is a self-optimizer, but inherently partially blind, so it must be steered by self-reflection.

The second cause of why we questioned technology so little in the modern period, and still don't, is related to human self-centeredness. Humans are social beings, evolutionary spoken in my view still not too far from other primates. Our brain is still hard-wired the way it was when we lived in a small group, and intra-species issues were more pervasive in daily life than anything else. So naturally we pay a lot of attention to anything that displays human characteristics. And because of this hard-wiring, people still instinctively feel the same things as primates, for example concerning issues of dominance. We therefore are instinctively preoccupied with thinking about other people instead of thinking about other entities in our world, like technologies. And it's a struggle overcoming these instincts.

Overcoming instincts though is not the only way for a symbiotic and equal relationship with technology though. Technology must be designed more humanized and social too. My point is that technology is not separate from us though it seems to be so, but that it is an intrinsic part of us. We externalize ourselves through our technologies, therefore they become part of humanity, as if they are our temporary organs. This view where humans co-evolve with their technologies, thus forming a new, more transformable and expanded organism, is more holistic, integrative and more attractive to me. At this point it is undeniable how we are connected with our technologies. For example, I am now linked up to the internet, sharing my views with millions of people. And astonishingly, within a radius of one meter from my head are located 24 electronic devices: three mobile phones, a wireless home phone, two digital cameras, a webcam, a laptop, three computer mouses, a graphic calculator, four USB flash drives, an MP3 player, two desk lamps, a massaging device, a printer, a Wacom tablet, a lavalamp and a water boiler. If we just lost a bit of self-centeredness it would be easy to see that these things are part of us, and that the concept we have of our selves, our bodies, and our minds, are only social constructs.

So if you see technologies as part of us, and things with which we necessarily socially interact, it is easy to see how they can not be neutral. Any human being strives for certain values more than for others, so the technologies he uses and designs will naturally incorporate these values. Philosophers like Andrew Feenberg and Peter-Paul Verbeek have already given strong arguments for this thesis. The latter for example shows how technologies amplify or reduce perceptions and invite or inhibit certain uses. This is in my opinion a much more subtle and complex view than the technological determinist view. It makes people feel responsible and thoughtful about their actions and the way they design technologies. Technologies are not neutral, they are value-biased.

The second thing on which I would like people to agree with me is about depth, and how human work should be consistent on an infinite amount of conceptual layers of complexity. It sounds hard, but it can be reached by a simple and seemingly childish exercise: asking yourself why you are doing it, and keep asking yourself why after answering the previous question. Then ultimately you would come to the essence of yourself and of your work, the underlying ideas. Then you can extrapolate these ideas and critically ponder what kind of world it would result in. This is your utopia. Do it for opposite ideas, and hence you have your dystopia. I'd say that when it's not completely clear why people are doing things, or there is confusion about whether it's good or bad, people should think a bit more about what it would mean to the world as a whole to do it too, instead of following gut instinct, which is inherently present-biased. I hope you will agree that having a clear and authentic vision underlying your work is a good thing to do. The work might fall under some category of work or art, but then still I don't find it respectable when people are not able to explicitly state the vision underlying the category.

This all leads to my point about the following project. It seems to have been designed by people who feel no responsibility whatsoever for the ethical side of technology design. But I might be generalizing. I am just at the same time bothered and amused about how developers and researchers can sometimes seem to be blind for the long-term consequences of what they are doing. Or more than that, I am bothered by their lack of incorporating a subtle and authentic feeling for what is beautiful and what is good into their creations. I might again be too worried, but this project just blew my mind because of the extent in which it mimics a certain dystopian science fiction movie.

At ModLab, a research laboratory for modular robots, people created a modular robot that can reassembly itself after exploding into different parts. Take a look at this:

Now I have the feeling that these developments stem at least partially subliminally from movies, like visual imprints of the future people subconsciously try to work towards. The movie's point was that artificially intelligent machines could once exterminate humanity, but somehow this point is not what seeps through into development, rather the superficial effects seep through. I am not afraid or narcistically biased towards my own species, but simply think that not thinking through your work on more philosophical levels is not good. So I am not worried, only promoting to do good, and to deeply define what is good. Blindly developing technologies and seeing where applications pop up is not the way to go, since apart from introducing a separate technology you are also contributing to technological development as a whole. I see a lot of developments that, when combined and perfected, can lead to technologies exactly like the T-1000 in Terminator 2; a shape shifting, intelligent humanoid machine, consisting of nano-scale modules that cooperatively form a swarm that gives it capabilities like self-assembly, running faster than humans, feelings, and even conscious thought. I am only warning that it is not as harmless as it seems, and that technologies are slowly running out of control. This is already visible on the internet, where all kinds of autonomous bots are contributing to make the internet behave like a complex organism beyond our control. Douglas Rushkoff referred to this as the Datasphere. A map of the internet was recently made, showing how complex it is becoming, seemingly almost like the neural structure of the human brain:



So by looking at the internet we might be able to see where it is going when we start designing the same complexity into physical products; we need to be really careful. Our minds are already spoiled with so much useless information, but if technologies become more physically active and intelligent they will also directly affect our bodies. I am warning that if we are not self-critical and very careful, we might end up with machines that don't know how to interact with us socially, and cause great harm to us when they run out of control. Just like humans, they can develop thought processes that make them believe something is the right thing to do, while it's not. Just like humans, intelligent machines will need to struggle to learn what is truly good and beautiful. If we just put them out there as our children, unguided, they need to learn all this by experience, and, just like humanity, have to go through different phases or modes of being. For example, machines might develop egotistic behavior, because they are tricked that this will lead to their happiness or whatever quality it is they are optimizing.

I think that there could already quite soon be a chaos point, where different processes align and a technology is created that changes us radically, just as the internet has done in a few years, but now on the more direct, bodily level of the everyday life world. To prevent this, we must critically self-reflect, develop ourselves, and try to imbue machines with spiritual insights, like some cosmic machine consciousness.

I really hope to stir up some debate as to the ethical design of intelligent systems, but moreover I would promote social design processes, integrated into everyday life, to immediately, interactively, and iteratively integrate technological development with society. To keep technological development more under collective control, and not make unforeseen mistakes.
